Cole is a New York native specializing in black and white photography. At age 14, Cole stumbled upon a book by George Eastman, and his passion for photography was born. He spent the next 10 years taking pictures, using a darkroom, or engrossed in books about photography; traditional black and white images by Adams, Weston and Bullock and other photographers caused a physical reaction within Cole.

Currently, Cole Thompson is still a black and white photographer. According to Cole, “color records the image, but black and white captures the feelings that lie beneath the surface.” He was inspired in his work by the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley, which reads:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of Circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of Chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
