Sony FE 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS Preview

Englewood Camera just received its first shipment with the brand new, full-frame FE 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS lens, and our employees put it to the test straightaway!

According to Sony, the full-frame 90mm medium telephoto macro E-mount lens features built in image stabilization for sharp, clear images at up to 1:1 magnification, even when shooting handheld. Advanced optics and coatings with a 9-blade circular aperture deliver exceptionally smooth bokeh that G Lenses are renowned for. Sharp in-focus rendering is achieved with a floating focus mechanism that suppresses aberration equally at all focusing distances, whether the subject is far away or extremely close. Other advanced technologies, such as the Nano AR Coating and Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass, elevate overall performance to an extremely high standard.

Kyle Cooper, our in-house Sony specialist and user, agrees that hand-holding the lens is easy because of the built-in OSS image stabilizer. Kyle also maintains that the manual focus control of the lens is very fluid–and thanks to Sony’s built-in focus peaking assist, focusing manually is actually quicker than attempting the autofocus. While there is a setting on the lens to limit the focus distance, the lens struggles to autofocus on subjects closest to the lens. The lens does have a built-in ring to switch between AF/MF, however, so it is a seamless process to move back and forth between the focus modes.  All in all, the lens is sharp, smooth, and quiet–and a pleasure to work with.

The Sony FE 90mm f2.8 Macro G OSS retails for $1,099.99. Come check it out!
