Englewood Camera sees a lot of cool old stuff. Having been in business for more than 60 years, and with our used equipment department, a lot of vintage treasures have ended up on our shelves or in our backroom.
One cool item that is hot, hot, hot right now is the Graflex 3 Cell Flashgun–an accessory from the Speed Graphic 4×5 cameras of the 1940s. This tube held flash bulbs for photojournalists or other photographers, and wasn’t very exciting for collectors or working photographers after that time period. That is, it wasn’t exciting until Star Wars.
In 1977, George Lucas came out with the original Star Wars, and a sweat new weapon called the Lightsaber. This simple yet elegant weapon was modeled after the Graflex 3 Cell flashtube, and was only slightly modified for the Star Wars films. Englewood Camera is lucky to have one of these original flashtubes in our collection–though we have quite a few other models of the flashtube that can also serve as Lightsaber props. Crazier yet, with the launch of Episode VII, The Force Awakens, these flashtubes are selling on eBay from $500 on up. The other versions can go from $50 to $250 too, and we have some replicas available in our eBay store. Want to read more on the history of the Graflex 3 Cell flashtube as the Lightsaber prop? It’s that time of year! Break out the face paint, masks, capes, or whatever tickles your fancy….Halloween is coming! To celebrate one of our favorite holidays–probably because it’s the one day our employees can break dress code–Englewood Camera is having a fun, social-media inspired contest. On Saturday, October 31st, share your best costume pictures with us via Instagram (you must tag @englewoodcamera), Twitter (tweet @englewoodcamera), and on our Facebook page (facebook.com/englewoodcamera). You may submit photos of yourself, your wife, your kid, your dog, your turtle, your grandpa…you get the picture (see what we did there?!).
To get you all pumped for a fun-filled Halloween, here is a picture of Erin’s unipig!
Lomography announced a new addition to its growing line up of art lenses: the Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens.
This brass lens features a high quality Russian optical design, delivering sharp images with a “deeply strong color,” and offers a maximum aperture of f/1.9. While the Petzval 58 will be made in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts, it can be easily adapted to work with other systems, such as Sony or Olympus.
Fujifilm has been quite the brand the last few years, with the introductions of mirrorless APS-C cameras X-Pro 1 and X100. These cameras revolutionized the digital market, appealing to traditional rangefinder photographers (myself included). I’ve been a Leica M shooter, using an M6 with film, and it’s a system I love and can’t seem to abandon. However, my employment at Englewood Camera allows me the unique opportunity to demo gear when it comes in, and I was very fortunate to take a Fujifilm X-T1 with a few lenses to Europe this month. I can’t say enough positive things about this system–and though I haven’t made the commitment yet, I’m definitely one step closer.
Hello! I’m Kyle and I’ve worked at Englewood Camera for about 4 and a half months. What an introduction right? I told Erin that I wanted to create a Valentines Day post for the blog because I’m so romantic and all that gushy stuff. So, I’ve compiled a short list of places in or around Denver you should probably take the significant-other/photographer friend in your life tomorrow. There is nothing more romantic than a photo-inspired date!
Now I’ve only lived in the wonderful city for 6 months so I may be missing THE BEST PLACE, so let me hear it if I do. (Comment on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or right here on this blog post.)
The Denver Aquarium
Did you know that otters hold hands when they sleep, and that clown fish love Sea Anemones and often hide in their tentacles from predators. Cleaner shrimp will clean the teeth of eels. And Sea Horse father’s carry their children…that’s romantic. And you can watch REAL mermaids swimming with the fish. Mermaids are romantic…just don’t try to date one. What’s more romantic than taking pictures or romantic sea creatures, not much. Leave the flash at home, bump up that ISO and go get em.’ Continue reading Love Day Through The Lens
Englewood Camera was located in Englewood (big surprise!) for a long time before we located to our Littleton store in the 1980’s. Every once in a while, we stumble across interesting pieces from our past; old mailing labels, old film order envelopes, or customers bringing in gear they purchased. This week, we had a customer bring in a Fujica ST801 single-lens reflex camera with a 50mm f/1.4, original boxes, and…an original sales receipt dated 6/28/1977. After nearly 38 years, this camera came back for resale, and in mint condition! Check out the picture below–the complete set, with Englewood Camera receipt! Pretty cool used purchase this week–it can be yours for $150!
With innovative new products, there’s an instant film revolution happening all across the country! Englewood Camera carries instant film products from both Fujifilm and Impossible Project, including cameras and film. However, Fujifilm recently developed the Instax Share SP-1 printer–a very cool, very compact device that prints instant photos on Mini Instax film–directly from your WiFi enabled tablet or phone! We decided to test drive the printer and show you fun examples of how it works!
